I almost don’t want to say it, but… happy last Friday of October! A couple of days ago I was thinking ahead to the plans I have once I’m back in Madrid, and I was hit with the overwhelming realization that 2022 is almost over. Let’s not talk about that, though.
Instead, today is a special Friday favorites focused on my most-cherished newsletter format: the roundup. It’s a roundup of roundups of sorts! The entire reason I write a Friday favorites post every week is due to my own fondness for listicles. Oftentimes these collections of links are how I find out about new recipes, food culture commentary, and and the latest pop culture back in the US.
So get your “open in new tab” finger ready, curl up at a coffee shop like the one pictured above, and enjoy!
E. at In Good Taste always has interesting issues that frequently include a recipe alongside an assortment of links—food-related and beyond. Her most recent newsletter is worth checking out for the chicken and rice recipe alone (and also the cat article, naturally):
I look forward to the Nibbles edition of Rachel’s newsletter ingredient every month. The October edition includes a new take on apple picking and an article on how oysters broke into the fine dining scene, along with several other links that I have bookmarked for later reading.
Sophie at Five Things I Ate is always posting about the fabulous things she finds. I enjoyed her apple-themed piece below, and I’m especially jealous of the apple spice ice cream she sampled.
I’ve never been to Australia, but I’m saving Hetty Lui McKinnon’s roundup of the best places to eat in Sydney for when I finally make it there.
And in the spirit of being in the US on October 31st this year, here are a couple of non-roundup Halloween-y articles, too:
You can’t miss As We Eat’s history of trick-or-treating and exploration into three of the most popular Halloween candies:
Lorraine at the Punk Lady Apple has a fun discussion up about “gravestone recipes”:
And finally, a bit of a step away from the culinary, but still firmly in my field of interest, is Olivia’s post dedicated to spooky words. I feel personally connected to this list due to the inclusion of the word “sanguivorous,” which reminded me of the time I chose the word “sanguine” for a college application essay asking me to expound upon my favorite word. I still remember my high school guidance counselor gently pointing out to me that I may need to address the fact that “sanguine” has a second meaning other than “optimistic”.
Enjoy the weekend, including eating any leftover candy that doesn’t get snatched up by Trick-or-Treaters (or you know, just buy candy for yourself, which is my personal plan)!
See you on Sunday for our next Sunday Sobremesa!

Oooh, I think I may have some new favourites in there! And thanks for including me xx
Love this roundup, Kiki!
