The one thing that never ceased to amaze in the US was portion size. It isn't a joke when they say that the food portions are bigger. I remember years ago I went to a movie theatre and just wanted some water, so I was given this MASSIVE cup filled to the top - I think I missed half the movie from how hydrated I was!

I think tater tots are quite an American potato-form as well? We definitely don't have them in the UK! It's a shame because I love eating them. They're so little and you can eat a whole load before feeling full. In the US, I think there's a stronger "get in and get out" mentality at a restaurant, unless you're eating at a fancy restaurant? It's more fast paced and one of the joys of Spanish culture is the relaxed atmosphere and a stronger emphasis on enjoyment of food and friends.

Yesss! The portion sizes here are huge! It makes sense why taking home leftovers is so popular here.

Tater tots are definitely an American thing! It’s one of David’s favorite foods to get when we’re in the US. We actually made them from scratch at home in Madrid once; they were delicious but in my opinion not worth the work. I’ll just get my fix while I’m here 😂

You’re right, nicer restaurants in the US are usually a bit slower paced. There are a couple of brunch places that I like to go to while I’m visiting my family and the vibe is much more relaxed.

Oh I am actively resisting the Americanisation of server culture here... I just want to be left in peace!

It’s funny, I never noticed when living in the US since it’s what I grew up with. But now having experienced both, I much prefer the European way!

Is server culture changing there? I think we’re getting more and more American concept restaurants in Madrid but luckily the service style hasn’t made it (and I hope it doesn’t haha).

Oh it is for sure becoming more American. We've had American concept places (obviously) for ages and loads of American chains, but the amount of times we were asked if everything was okay at brunch yesterday, the first time BEFORE WE HAD HAD A CHANCE TO START EATING the food that arrived with another server seconds before. It is getting too much. Also I swear in clothes shops we were given a good 5 minutes rather than the new 5 seconds before being asked after walking in if they could help us with anything.
