I always were scared of oysters - they aren't the most nice looking seafood to eat, but I absolutely love them now. I go down to the coast of England to a little town called Whistable. It's a small seaside area and the oysters are freshly caught everyday. I've seen the fishermen and a big truck out on the beach during low tide picking oysters, which brings me to a bit of joy to see it soo fresh. Do you pair it with anything? I had quite a bit of tabasco for a spicy quick and little bit of horseradish.
Haha I totally understand the oyster apprehension! So cool that you’re able to see the fishermen picking the oysters in Whistable. It’s nice when you can see with your own eyes where your food is coming from!
I usually just put a squirt of lemon, but I’ll also occasionally put tabasco. I’ve never tried them with horseradish!
I'm so glad you loved one of my favourite towns in the world to eat.
Also, much to my heartbreak, we had a home there for 12 years and I've never sat on those steps to eat oysters, I always had them in a restaurant because I'm the only one in m family who likes them!
I didn’t realize that you’re the only one in your family who likes oysters! If you ever need a travel buddy to make that step experience happen, you know who to call ;)
No I’ve never eaten raw oysters just fried, but you know that! I’m glad your taste has changed for the better! I really enjoy all the stories and all the things you eat! Since I’m still landlocked, I really enjoy all that you put on here. I enjoy looking at the adventures that you and David do! Thank you for taking the time to write and post recipes I can actually do❤️
Maybe next time you come visit you can try raw oysters! I think there’s still a lot to be said for small, landlocked towns, even if seafood isn’t the highlight. There’s lots of good food to be found there!
I’m glad you like the recipes- there’s at least one new one that (I think) you’ll like coming on Friday. Not one of my/our own, but one I tried this week and liked a lot, and it’s super easy and fast. Stay tuned! :)
Yummmm I love this. Bretagne is such a special region - magical, mystical, and the best food in France, at least IMO! I love raw oysters, with a squeeze of lemon or mignonette. We've got a place nearby in Atlanta that's known for incredible oysters (odd, maybe, for a city that's landlocked) called Kimball House; so that satisfies the oyster urge every now and then. Have you read MFK Fisher's Consider the Oyster? Should be regular required reading (IMO) for huître-philes.
I just took a look at Kimball House and their whole menu looks amazing. I’ve actually just saved it in case there’s a trip to Atlanta sometime in my future! I haven’t read Consider the Oyster, but now I want to. Thanks for the recommendation!
Wonderful post Kiki, I can really tell you had a great time in Cancale. As a vegetarian I don't eat sea food, but that part of France appeals to me nonetheless... the vast ocean, the rawness of the vistas, so different from the everyday Mediterranean landscape I'm used to. Thanks for taking us with you in your travels!
Thanks, Sinù! It’s so worth a trip to that whole area even without the seafood; the landscape is truly gorgeous. I feel like Paris is so popular- and with reason because it’s amazing, and I love it- that sometimes people forget about all of the other beautiful spots in France!
