Welcome to Sunday Sobremesa, a twice-monthly thread to discuss food and culture while sipping on a cafe con leche (or un vodka limón1 if that’s more your style!).
The weather is starting to cool here, which is a good excuse for more evenings curled up in blankets with a good movie or series. Last week I talked a little about the show The Bear, which is absolutely one of the best “foodie” series that I’ve seen recently. David’s favorite food movie is Chef (I knew this without even asking him), but he says that No Reservations would be a close second. As for me, is it weird to say Ratatouille? But if I had to pick one not starring an animated rodent, it would probably be Julie and Julia. Apparently I have a thing for French food!
So I’m interested in hearing—what are your favorite movies or TV shows that revolve around food and/or the food industry? Excited to hear from you in the comments (and to start a list for cozy evenings to come)!
This film isn't entirely about food or the food industry, but the cooking and baking scenes from the movie Kiki's Delivery Service are so cozy and accurate, so that's where my mind goes first!
We just started watching The Bear on Hulu, which is a comedy/drama series about a young, award-winning chef from the fine dining world, who comes home to Chicago to run his family sandwich shop. I think you'd like the "Chicago-ness" of it.
I guess the best movie about food was Julie & Julia. It’s about Julie who takes on the task of creating the recipes of Julia Child. It was a very good movie I learned a lot never giving up and it is possible to do what you thought you couldn’t do!

Babette’s Feast! Favorite food movie 🎥
I'm a sucker for Big Night. I really enjoyed the HBO series, Julia. And yes, Ratatouille!
Please do not forget the very important food-related film Simply Irresistible!
