In culinary school, I butchered...everything. You probably don't want to know the details.
But I've always been scared of the bones in fish. I didn't grow up eating it, so as an adult I can butcher it and prep it and cook it, but I'm not a fish fan.
In Florida, I at least have a chance of buying some good fish and seafood. I need to practice!
I’m slowly getting less squeamish with the fish! Luckily the fish monger does most of the cleaning work or I don’t think I could handle it haha
Fish bones are scary!! Eating fish here definitely makes me follow the suggestion of being more present when you’re eating, because you never know when a tiny bone is going to sneak up on you.
Yeah it’s different for hobby fishermen as opposed to professionals! There’s actually a government decree that I found online (I didn’t link it since it’s in Spanish, and pretty complex) that declares that fishermen here have mandatory rest days on the weekend. The more you know... 😂
So true! It most definitely is different. I remember going camping and fishing on the river. So much fun! Where I live as you know any kind of fish is expensive! So your lucky to have a fish market that is affordable.
I agree 100% about fish being more expensive where you are! I was shocked the last time I was in when I saw the prices. The same thing goes for produce. We are definitely privileged to have access to fresh, (mostly) affordable food here!
Great post, Kiki. I was told the same thing in culinary school in NYC: final fish delivery is Friday morning for the weekend, so don’t order fish at a restaurant on Monday 😉 🐟
Thanks, Jolene! Between being a picky eater and not living near the coast, I didn’t eat much fish when I was younger so I didn’t know the Monday rule! Hence all of the fish-related questions I had once I moved here 😆
Love this!

Fishmongers are gems! Now that we're settled here I need to make some friends with the fishmongers. And the fishermen.
Yes! Two very important friends to have!
Didn’t know that about the fish ! We ate trout and catfish at of the river. It was good and fresh but I’ve learned a lot from your blog!
